I was told if I run metal duct from attic to 1st fl, I have to use a firestop. Was told sheet metal ok to use.I understand whats it used for.My question is can I use 4 peices of flat sheet metal or does it have to one peice.Plus does the sheet metal just meet the duct or does it form a letter L.Meaning is the sheet metal flat or forms a 90 degree and attaches to the ceiling and the duct.

Is this a commercial application ?? I have not ran into this in residential for simple duct work unless it is a flue pipe.

The way I handle situations where I'm not clear on what the code is telling me is I set a date with my inspector and we meet up at the job and he will explain exactly what he wants.
Like I said, I've never seen in residential where they wanted firestop for the air ducts. If it is flue piping then yes I use a sleeve.

With Matt . Dont know of this in a home. But code is code where you are I guess. Yes Id break it at a 90oL at the duct. Hey if they are that bad now next they might want you to put fire dampers in all room to room duct
ED :D
Some local code officials will allow the use of a fire proof caulk between the duct & combustibles as long as the gap is not over a certain distance.
N. Carolina code is all penetrations through the ceiling need to be firestopped. Reguardless of what the building is used for. Safety is safety.
Take a 2" strip of metal and bend it in a 90 degree angle so you have 1" on one side and 1" on the other. One side buts up to the duct and the other side buts up to the ceiling. Screw the piece to the duct and repeat process on each side notching at the corners. This is to asure that ther is no way fire can get into the attic space.
