Hi:

My inspector took repeated readings for my AC and the temperature differences was 9. (suppose to be 17-22) So I requested an engineer to come to take a look and he said the issue was caused by a dirty air filter. After I replaced the filter, he checked the temp and told me that it was fine now (the difference was 17) On the other hand, my inspector said a dirty air filter should not cause this issue. I was wondering who is right? Please help!

First Id have to ask what kind of inspector looked at this and didnt find or see a dirty filter. 16 to 20 drop over a coil is good. Can be the coil should be cleaned also. What did they say about the freon charge????
Id go with the engineer.

No, the inspector did find the dirty filter, but he did not think that a dirty filter would case that big differences in temperature. He also thought that it most likely would be caused by a low freon.. So you think the dirty filter did affect the temperature difference, right?

Yes it can and a dirty coil also. Then freon??? any frost on the big copper line or was it cold and wet out by the compressor unit?? This should tell you if its low on freon.

Ed, I assume you mean that if it was cold and wet by the unit, the freon was fine and if it frost then it's a lack of freon?

You got it. Big copper line at the outdoor unit cold and wet. Freon should be ok
