Compressor running backwards ???

Had a tech come to recharge my A/C (Carrier model # 38AYC036310),
after just a squirt of freon the compressor kicked on which I thought was a good sign untill the tecnician said he detected a vacuum on his guages and that the compressor must be running backwards.
He said it made no sense to continue charging the system because I needed a new compressor or better yet a whole new unit.The unit is 6 yrs old and the warranty on the compressor was for 5 yrs.
Can a compressor run backwards? and if the compressor is bad should I just get a new compressor or replace the whole unit which appears to be in great shape.

Not likely. Some older scroll compressors could run backward but on a 6 yr old system, I doubt it. Call the company back & tell them to send out someone who knows what he's doing (besides trying to sell equipment).

I would strongly suggest that you have hired an unlicensed and unqualified person to look at your a/c.
If it is a scroll running backwards it would not pull a vacuum but rather would only work at a greatly reduced capacity and pressure and would rattle.
Anyone that works on standard reciprocating compressors knows that rotation can be in any direction.
You likely are low on refrigerant.

Run as fast as you can from this guy.

With GregH. Call a hvac tech to check it out. Good old ANNIE Analyzer can make the compressor run cw or ccw.Have had to do it to break some lose that where locked up.
