I apologize if this has been asked/answered in the past; the search didn't work too well.

I need to repoint a small area around my front brick steps. What is the best way & what supplies would I need in order to try and match up the mortar color as best I can?

Thanks for your time and assistance.

You could try some of the stains for concrete. You should wait for the color of the mortar to settle down for 90 days or so, before starting. Often, the differences are slight. Several years old mortar may have quite a difference between it and the new.

Take a piece of mortar to your local masonry yard and see if they can match it to a color stick from thier mortar suppliers standard colors...if you get a close enough match they can probably get you a 70 # bag...you just add sand (about 18 spade shovels full/bag; 9/half bag; 4.5/quarter bag) and water...If you need a custom color it could get real pricey...Washing the entire area with an acid based masonry cleaner will bring out the original color of the mortar
