View Full Version : driveway's sinking!

Greetings: My asphalt driveway leads up to a concrete floored carport. But the drive directly leading up to the concrete has started to sink into the ground below. Had the house for 6 years and it's been getting worse each year. It's only the 8 or so feet before the carport that shows any depression - the rest is OK. The drive now stops 2 inches below the level of the carport floor. Anyway, is this common, what could be the cause, and what can I do about it? I had someone from a local paving company come out last year and he told me to wait until the winter was over to see if it would "settle". No use fixing it and then having it sink some more he told me. But how far can it go before it does settle?
I know this is not a DIY because as I read from another post here, asphalt works best HOT, and that requires a pro.
So any help/suggestions would be appreciated,

Most common reason for asphalt drive to sink is a poor base under it. Usually a foot or so of soil is removed and replace with slate or gravel. This gives a good solid base for the asphalt. Unless this is a relativly new problem I think you would be OK in resurfacing. If the depressions had just started or just gotten worse it could mean problems under the drive {such as a water leak], in which case you might need to start over. I would get estimates and advice from several pavers with good rep and go from there.
