I have an old Whirlpool gas dryer, Model #LG5801XKW0, that has worked fine for the last 9 years ... after I bought it USED...don't actually know how old it is..

It turns the drum fine, but it has quit heating all of a sudden...

I would like to know if it's worth trying to fix myself, or buy another good quality used dryer instead...

Any and all help greatly appreciated,
Matt

Hello Matt and Welcome into my Gas Appliances topic.

Chances are the hot surface glowing ignitor burner out and needs replacement. Turn the machine on and watch the ignitor. If it's does not glow and all other selections are set correctly, chances are the ignitor is either burned out and not glowing or glowing too weakly to open the gas valve.

Read some of the existing posts in this forum pertaining to dryers. Plenty of info in them and also in these links: http://forum.doityourself.com/showthread.php?t=159481

Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, downloadable repair and or owners manuals which may be available online.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the most likely possible problem may be. They will need the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance parts dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and problem resolving matters. Dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs. Always check for gas leaks whenever moving the appliance and/or a repair includes any connection of a gas part.

Regards & Good Luck.

Sorry I didn't read the "stickies" before I posted my question...Loads of useful information there...

For some reason, I did not receive an e-mail regarding your reply...I will check my DIY account settings...

Again, thank you,
Matt

If your ignitor is working (glows red and then goes out, glows red and then goes out) but not igniting anything then it may be your gas valve solenoids are bad. My Kenmore dryer was doing that and I replaced both gas valve solinoids and it works fine now. Sears Parts store had both solenoids as a package deal for $14.00 so it cost me that plus 10 minutes of time to install them and my dryer works like a champ again now.

The ignitor was working fine...It would flame up, but die out after only a minute or two of running....Found a guy who sells refurbished appliance parts, and replaced the WHOLE burner assembly for $10...Working fine now...

Thanks for y'alls help!
