Hello,
In our spare room, soon to be a boys room has a deep burgundy bottom wall colour. I was wondering if I should use a primer before painting a new lighter colour? I have the same concern in another room with a deep green colour.
Thanks
Charlie

Good thing you came here before going to the "depot" because they wouldn't be able to help you at all.Sure they can push buttons on a paint computer but beyond that...forget it.Go to a real hardware store where they will also tint the primer for free, know how much you can and cannot add (2 ozs. max per gallon),and be able to give you plenty of sound advice.

Never seen that before either. All paint stores I deal with tint for free, assuming you bought the product there.

To all the pro's. here let me say this. First of all you do not know where charlie brown lives. For all you know he could live on my block. I can assure you that paint stores where I live will in fact charge non professionals to tint their paint.Whether that is by charging more for non stock colors or for custom tinting or color matching. It will cost you. I made the assumption that charlie brown is not in fact a professional painter. I believe it is more likely than not he will be charged for tinting his paint The fact that you cannot tint 123 with 4 oz of int is common knowledge and not a secret that only the hardware store guy knows :wall: Some haredware stores have some pretty old stuff laying aroung to and I find they always charge morefor paint. I do not expect you to agree.
The fact that professional painters do not have to pay for tinting is right. The paint supplier want you to buy all your paint at his store. He makes money on how much you purchase[volume]. The paint store also makes money by charging the one time purchaser for that couple of gallons he buys. I for one am glad that I am not charged for tinting. I expect to pay for tinting in stores I do not frequent. It seems fare to me.
I am glad that prowallguy, spdavid and marksr can walk into any paint store in the world and get free tinting. You will not get it here though. Will I get it free if I mention your names. I think not.

Sure you will, I'm known nationwide :D
Seriously, I think the misunderstanding is about paying for tinting as compared to paying for custom colors. I have never seen any store ever charge for tinting per say. What I see is that different colors come in different bases. Base 1 for pastels, base 2 for medium colors, base 3 for dark colors, and base 4 for deep tones. Each base is succesively higher in price, because the actual tint used is expensive. More tint used, higher the price. Stock or shelf colors are the cheapest, because the retailer doesn't have the spend time (labor) or tint (materials) to supply you with the product.
After reading your first post, I called five (5) paint stores, a Ben Moore dealer, Sherwin Williams, Farrel-Calhoun, Ace Hardware, and Porter Paints. None of these I do business with on a regular basis. I called as a Joe Homeowner. I asked the price on their average latex interior primer. Then I said i wanted it tinted close to the finish color, in these cases, a medium brown, what would that cost. They all told me no charge. Point is, if the paint suppliers you deal with actully charge extra for tinting, you are getting ripped off.

Not to some of the yahoos that work at the big box stores.

Thank you all for your replys. I find all very helpful.
Yes, I am not a professional painter. I will ask when I purchase the primer the cost to add tint.
I guess the best bet is to phone and ask costs at various stores to find the best deals.
Looks like I will go ahead and prime then repaint the room.
thanks
Charlie

'round here, the S-W stores do not charge for tininting primer, either. A few years ago I stopped in an S-W store that did not know me. I did not ask for any discount or "professional" discount. I was not charged for having the shieldz tinted.
If you buy the primer at a local big box and expect a paint store to tint it, then, yes you may be charged. And no, my local S-W stores don't charge a premium over the local big boxes for zinsser primers.
BTW - fare is what you pay the taxi driver. Fair is being treated as you should. ;)
