I have a ceiling fan that just stopped running. When I turn it on, it just hums. The blades can be turned freely by hand. If I get the blades going by hand, then turn the power on, then the blades keeps running, but it doesn’t pick up any speed.

The tech at Compass East, who makes this particular Hampton Bay fan, said the problem is with one of the capacitors. But unfortunately, they no longer have parts for this discontinued ceiling fan.

Removing the light assembly, I found three 5mfd capacitors. Thinking each was tied to each speed, I tried running the fan at each speed position and also in reverse. But the fan still just sit there and hums.

Before attempting to replace the capacitors, are there any other reason why the fan would not run? I can't tell if the capacitors are polarized or not because they are enclosed in epoxy.

Any help would be appreciated?
