I am novice to water heaters, and I just moved into my place 5 months ago. Since yesterday, my hot water heater (GAS), has not been working. The pump which shuts on and off automatically on top of the heater always stays on, but I get no hot water. Hope I am explaining the problem correctly. Any advice is helpful.

Thanks

Hello Ed,
Its gas water heater. The pump with a switch on it, sits on top of the 50 gallon water tank. My understanding is the pump starts up when the tank is out of hot water. The pump usually stays on for sometime and then it shuts off automatically. But since yesterday the pump is remaining ON all the time ( its doesn't shut off), and I don't have any hot water.

Did I answer your question?
Thanks

It's more likely that the pump is a recirculating pump to keep hot water moving thru the pipes in the house. This will cycle when the water in the pipes gets below a certain temperature. If it's staying on all the time then the Water Heater isn't working for some reason. Check the pilot light first. If it's not on try to relight it following the instructions on the water heater. If the water heater still doesn't work then there may be water in the burner section and that will need to be cleaned out - turn off the gas to the water heater before doing any such maintenance.

If you aren't comfortable with these things, call a plumber - it will probably cost you about $100 but you will get the problem solved.

Hello,
I called the plumber regarding fixing my broken hot water heater and he sdai I have a BAD "Ignition control Module" and thats why my Air vent is constantly running, instead of shutting off after sometime. He also said thats why I don't have hot water.
Hopefully, that will be fixed.

Thanks
