Electronic Alarms and Home Security Devices - what type of system to get?

I know nothing about alarm systems, but my daughter just moved into the downstairs of our house, so I'd like some way to secure the windows and doors down there at night- I'm probably not looking for a system that will contact the police if the alarm goes off, just something that will sound within the house if someone messes with the doors/ windows. I see that GE has a smarthome system for about $300- is this worth it? Any other products you would recommend?

For what you want to do, any of the small, all in one wireless units like the Simon, or Lynx will probably fill your bill.
