My gas dryer is about 10 years old and only works normal in the cool down cycle. It puts out some heat but in the timed, auto-dry and air-only cylcles the timer does not make its clicking sound and the drum doesn't turn. Where do I start first, troubleshooting the timer? Since it puts out heat in the cool down I figure it's not an igniter problem. Any ideas?

Hello Dave77 and Welcome into my Gas Appliances topic.
Start by checking the glowing hot surfact ignitor. If it's orange in color while glowing, then it is not glowing hot enough to function correctly.
A hot glow coil, working correctly, will glow an intense bright yellow orange in color. Too much orange, any reddish color or a dull orange means the glow coil is weak. Replacing it should solve the problem.
You can replace the coil yourself. First unplug the appliance. Loosen or remove the screws securing the glow ignitor. Follow the two wires attached to the ignitor. At the end farthest from the ignitor will be a wire pull apart quick disconect.
Disconnect the ignitor at that point. Install the new ignitor exactly as you found the existing coil. Replace each part in reverse order. Plug in the appliance and turn it on. The burner now should work.
Be advise that some new replacement ignitors do not come with quick disconnect ends. In this case, it's okay to cut off the quick disconnect from the old ignitor and attach it to the new ignitor.
Simply clip off the wires several inches above the disconnect on the old ignitor, attach to the wires of the new ignitor and wire nut the two ends together.
Repeat the process to attach the other set of wires and wire nut them together. There is no postive nor negative {polarity} to be concerned with.
Glow ignitors are fragile & they break easily. Handle and install the new ignitor carefully. Glow ignitors are a non returnable and non refundable electric componet.
Other items you may need to do or want to check/do {whichever applies} while your in the process of repairing the dryer. Pick and choose as needed.
Restricted Exhaust Vent:
The vent tube is located behind or to the side of the dryer. It needs to be removed totally from both sides to completely clear out the lint. Check the entire system. This also includes the exhaust vent hood outside. It has a flapper that may not be opening fully or not at all. Locate any restriction within the entire exhaust system and clean out all lint. Replace exhaust vent tubing as needed.
Defective Solenoids:
There are two...both are on top of the gas valve.
Solenoids also supply voltage to the glow coil and are part of the electrical loop.
You'll need to remove them from the top of the gas valve by removing the entire gas valve assembly first. Take them off the gas valve body by removing the holddown cover plate or take the entire gas valve unit to your local appliance parts store and have the entire assembly and parts tested.
Defective Gas Valve:
Remove entire unit as an assembly. Take the entire assembly to your local appliance parts store for testing. Gas valves are not repairable. Replacement is the only option if defective.
CAUTION: Do Not attempt to repair the gas valve! This is a non repairable item!
