my old dvd player which is a sansui dvd/vcr unit is always freezing up and skipping. i went out and bought a cleaner for it, but it is still doing this, if they were old dvd's i would understand a little better, but it does this with brand new ones straight out of the case.
my other problem is that we went out and bought a cheap magnavox dvd player and hooked it up, and it's not even working, i can't even get a display out of it. we hooked it up the same way as our old one, and when i turn the power on, nothing. we have to hook it up to our vcr because the tv dont have the audio, video jack.

The old combo is probably shot and not worth fixing.
For the new dvd player, either buy a new tv with the composit inputs OR buy an rf modulator.

Regarding your first problem note that there are many factors that could result in freezing or skipping. A friend of mine bought an expensive Samsung DVD player (combo too) and in almost 50% of the cases the picture freezes, skips or corrupts even with original DVDs. According to the Samsung dealer, the lens requires some setting and therefore my first recommendation is to contact your DVD dealer (or technician) and ask him to check your lens alignment. Since yours is a very old model the lens might have lost its alignment (especially if for long you've been transporting this device from one place to another!).
As for the second problem check the region setting, the DVD player might only be able to play DVDs in a specific region.
Btw… instead of hooking up the DVD with your VCR try purchasing a switch. This small device serves as a router were you can switch between VCR – TV connection and DVD – TV connection.

thanks for the help, we finally figured out the problem with the magnavox. the vcr had to be set on a certain channel for it to work. i'll try calling the manufacturer for the problem with the combo and see what they say. thanks chassy
