I have bare walls..after removing wallpaper. I plan on painting and need to texture the walls. Anyone use the sand additives in the paint? Or go the old way and use the spray gun? Any other ideas?..thanks!!!

Depends on what type of texture you desire.

Does the mix in sand type go on think in places or even with a roller?

Sand textures look best when created using a swirl-finish. Or, if you want it to be random, then two coats, each applied in different directions with a roller, will provide a pretty even consistency.

If you are texturing to hide defects I don't think sand paint will do. Using a hopper gun powered by an air compressor that shoots sheetrock mud is the way to go. You can do "orange peel" or knock down easily and it will hide a lot of sins. Still doing repairs first will to start with a nice surface will be best.
