We've updated an old kitchen and gutted mostly everything. There was tile in between the upper and lower cabinets. I removed one wall of tile and it completely destroyed the wall behind. The tile is in good shape and actually looks ok. For simplicity (and cost) I want to put a post form countertop in but the backsplash covers the tile about 1/4 inch where the old backsplash fit underneath. Likewise the counter would then sit away from the wall (approx. the width of the tile, but no space as it butts against tile). Is this ok to do or a crazy idea?

hi
you might scribe off 1/4 in from the backsplash where it curls to meet the tile or if there no problem with the extra 1/4 overhang i would leave it and simply caulk along the top of the backsplash to the tile

cheers

thanks PG. I like the scribe idea as the countertop would then be flush against the wall (and align better with the base cabinet). The problem i think is that it's a laminate post form and I suspect I'd split the laminate along the top. I could have this wrong as I'm a weekend wannabe when it comes to this stuff.

The other option which you suggested was ok is to keep it as is and just seal where the top of backsplash meets the tile. This problem is only with the back wall (of a U kitchen). Does it matter if the overhang is slightly different on the adjacent walls?
