I need something that will cleanly bore a 1.5 inch hole 1/2 way through a board.

My first thought was to use a hole saw, but that would cut a nice outline, but leave the wood inside the hole. Is there any kind of bit or tool that would cut that hole and gouge out the wood?

I believe what your looking for is a Forsner bit. You could probably use a spade bit but the point may be a little long, depending on how thick the wood is.
Good luck with your project.

That is also the size of the 38mm hinge bit. It is a forsTner bit too.

If you want to see what one looks like and you're Googling, you'll need to spell it "forstner".

I give up. The word is spelled FORSTNER. If you say it quickly the people at the home center or hardwares will know exactly what you need  .

Good luck on your project.

I plead innoccent!

I did originally spell it correctly, but seeing majakdragon's spelling, I changed it just before posting. I'm innocent I tell ya, I was no where near the keyboard when it happened!

At the Home Depot's where I shop, you are more likely to get a blank stare if you ask for a Forstner bit (or most anything else, for that matter). Once, when I needed a new drain valve for my compressor, I asked a female employee for a petcock and almost got slapped.
