View Full Version : Duct for microhood

I'm currently trying to install a new over-the-range microwave in our recently refurbished kitchen. We're trying to take advantage of some pre-existing ceiling ductwork that the old range hood in the kitchen used to vent to the outside. The issue: the existing 4x10 duct opening in the ceiling is offset from the wall about 6" while the 4x10 vent location on the top of the microwave is only 1/2" from the wall.

We can't do anything to move the existing ceiling duct vent or the location of the microwave. So, I'm going to have to jog some 4x10 ductwork inside the cabinet above the microwave. My question: is there a flexible version of 4x10 ducting? I haven't seen anything at Lowe's or HD - just the regular tin stuff. Right now I'm planning on going to work on some regular tin with a pair of tin snips and some pliers to see if I can make my own angled length of duct. I'm hoping there's an easier solution to this problem.

Any ideas?

Matty87,

Flexible ducting for this is not available but an alternative is having a sheet metal firm make up what you need. Maybe see your local Heating Company and let them do it for you. Shouldn't cost that much to do it the right way.

Good Luck!

Thats a 3 1/4"X10" wall stack that you have there. Get a short piece of it. Now like you said make the off set out of it. say like on one 10" side 3 " up cut a 2" strip out of it. now on each 3 " side cut the opening in a V down to the back 10" side. Now do the same on the other 10" side about 6" up from there. You can also take a piece of cardboard 3 1/4" wide and cut and fit it for the offset from the top to the bottom of the duct and use it as pat to make the cuts you need. Then dont know how much room you have there could get two 6"to 3 1/4X10 universal boots
and fill in with a 6"90oL or 6" aluminum flex pipe.

Using a flex duct is asking for trouble. It isn't condusive to a free flow a[of air and will clog much easier.
