hi, i just bought a house that was built in 1860. the well is not on record anywhere. i have a shallow well pump(1/2hp for wells up to 25ft. Would that mean 25ft from the house or 25ft deep?) Sorry i am pretty ignorant on the subject. i can see where the pipe leaves the house. i have talked to a plumber in the area and he told me it is normal in this area for people to dig down about 15 feet until they hit water and thats it. Should my well have a cover on it?? Is it safe to assume that its near the house?? the house has a new deck on the house that is over where the pipe would come out of the house. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Shallow well pumps are good for wells that have a water level depth of 25' or less. The well could be close to the pump, or perhaps a ways away. There shoud be some type of cover on it.
