View Full Version : Replacement cables, friction

One of my extension spring cables recently snapped, frayed after years of rubbing against the edge of a bracket on the top track. (There's a noticeable groove in the bracket from this!)

1) Can I use an eye-hook to hold the replacement lift cable above the bracket? I don't think I can avoid the bracket problem otherwise (at least, not without re-hanging the track or similar work). Obviously this would rub against the cable, but the contact would be smooth and rounded.

2) Does the rubbing of a somewhat slack safety cable against its extention spring pose any threat to either cable or spring? I can't imagine it does, but I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!
Joe

No, anywhere the cable rubs, the cable and the piece that it is rubbing on will fail.

If there is enough slack in the cable where the cable doesn't change the angle of the stretch spring, it will be ok.

There is a reason why the cable is rubbing and it should be corrected. Ignoring this problem will cause pre-mature part failure.

If you describe the area where the cable is rubbing a little better maybe we can come up with a easy solution.
