I am considering buying a large screen DLP television, but have heard that they need a bulb replacement every 2-3 years at a cost of about $200-$300 plus installation. Is this true and is the bulb something that I could replace myself?

I dont know if a dlp needs a replacement...as far as i understand its a series of mirrors reflecting for DLP....Plasma on the other hand .....YES bulb goes your SOL.....DUDE wait for a little while longer , prices are dropping as technology changes...i'm in the same boat as u ...want to get into a new TV but give it another 6-8 months I think we will both win in that situation

Yes, the bulb does need to be replaced every 2-3 years. It is a special bulb and yes, you can change it yourself. Be sure to follw the directions in your manual so you don't screw anything else up.

would you recommend the DLP over an LCD or Plasma? We are looking to spend about 3 grand and would like to get something in the 42-50ish inch range.

I can tell you haven't done much shopping, yet. Plasmas have a great picture, but you'll spend $3500 and up for a good HD one.
DLP vs LCD - both are good. Plenty of pros/cons on the net.
