Please, someone HELP!!!! (Hunter fan switch)

I have a Hunter 4 wire cieling fan. The fan switch stopped working and my wife was going to replace the switch. She pulled all the wires out without making a note of where they went back. I have a black,orange,puple and yellow wires. My switch is marked 1,2,3 and L. I have no idea where to start putting wires. If someone could please help I would greatly appreciate it. or test light? Any way of checking for power?

My other idea is to call Hunter, they may be able to tell you which wires go where on the switch.

Does the new switch have directions with it?

The new switch doesn't have instructions that say which wires go where... it says to mark the way they came out of the old switch. The circuit tester will not work because I don't know where tyo put the hot wire and ground when I do find them. But thanks for the insight. I will try to contact Hunter, maybe they can help. I didn't think about that!! Thanks again.
