I had a similar problem with a RCA home theatre that the wife bought me for Christmas last year, Cd's would play, but not dvd's. It did work initially and then after a while it would freeze up midway through a disc. I took it back and the owner of the Radio Shack store said he would take it home and try a couple of movies over a weekend. Well he claimed that it worked good and recommended I buy a cleaner, and he questioned the age of my T.V. and if it had A/V jacks or not, which it didn't.
The next time I went to use the dvd it wouldn't play at all. This time I hooked it up to a 2003 T.V. and tried it on that, it wouldn't play on that either. Needless to say, back to the Radio Shack I go. THis time they sent it out and the dvd player was bad and was replaced. Of course it was under warranty so it was a freebie repair. When I picked up the repaired unit I also bought a RF modulator that connects between the T.V. antenna plug and the Home Theatre plugs just to be sure I could get a good signal.
Anyway, I'd check the age of the T.V., it may be a factor in the playing of the discs. Of course if its under warranty by all means take it back. If its just a dvd player, with the cost being the way they are I'd just buy a new one. THe repair bill on this one was half the cost of the unit itself.
