I just recently had an ADT Safewatch Pro 3000EN with a talking keypad (part number unknown) installed. The installer labeled some of the zones with words that the keypad does not speak. For example, one zone is labeled with no words that the keypad speaks, so it simply says "fault" when the zone is triggered. Oh, and I don't like it saying "fault".

I have the installer manual for the system. I know what words that the keypad will speak. I just can't determine how to program the zone text descriptors.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

If the keypad is a full alpha keypad, this can be readily done (within limits, I think the word "fault" is a hardwired default). If none of your keypads is a full alpha it's a lot trickier.

I think that your model is the equivalent of a Vista-20P.

Thanks for the reply.

I was wondering if my system was the equivalent of some other model I've read about on this forum. I looked all over the board in the control box and couldn't find anything to indicate a maker. There's some writing on the board but it looks to be a code. There is a label on one of the chips on the board. It says "Honeywell WA 3001 4.0". I'm guessing that is some sort of firmware version. I tried "googling" with this information and found nothing.

The talking keypad has an alpha LCD display. It has two lines of text. The top line says "disarmed chime", for example, and the lower one says "ready to arm".

Any idea of the process I need to use to change the text descriptors?

First you need to go into program mode, either by using the installer code + 8 + 00; or by powering down the system, and within 50 seconds of power up, pressing * + # simultaneously. If you have to use the power up method, start by pressing #20, this will make the system readback the installer code, 1 digit at a time, so that you will have it for future reference.

Since you have the install manual, this will be easier. There should be a section titled "Alpha Descriptor Programming". You will press *82, at that point you should be able to follow the prompts using the guidance in your manual.

Thanks! I have a manual but it seems incomplete. It's only about 16 pages.

I found the full installation/programming manual for the Vista 15P, 20P and 20PS at:

I appreciate your help. I'll change these descriptors then I'm off to tinker with X10 (which I've heard is a nightmare).
