I have a question concerning new duct work. We are building a two story house with two one story wings on each side. We are now ready for the Central Heat and Air. The house is 2856 sq. ft. The second floor, and the two wings all have attic space. The foundation is a crawl space of continuous concrete block (3 courses) I was told yesterday by an AC contractor that I would have a huge problem running the duct work for the bottom floor because we had only used 2x10 floor joist. The first floor has 9 ft ceilings. He is coming out to look at the project but I was wondering why he thinks it would be a problem? It would be nice not to be so uninformed when he comes out. We live in Louisiana so we must have Central Air. Can anyone explain why there would be problems running the duct work for the first floor?

Thanks
Stephanie

Id go for 2 units here for sure. one up and one down One on the first floor Id put a heat AC unit blowing down and run the duct there in the crawl space no insulation on it with the cold air return to it in the center of the home. The up stairs heat and cool in the atticwith insulated duct. We put registers in the duct work down in the crawl space. To help heat it warm floors and keep it dry down there. There in the crawl space no vents 6 mil poly on the ground insulation on the walls and around the home there on the sill plate. Go to http://aboutsavingheat.com/crawlspace.html.

I would suggest 2 units one for up and one for down.

Although I would not go to the expence of conditioning the crawlspace.
I would install duct in crawlspace and insulate it as for the same for the upstairs unit in attic and insulate it.

I have installed duct with 2x10 joists before and had no real problems. I did have some problems once when the contractor went with those joists on a 12" center spacing. This leaves little to no room for a 4x10 or 4x12 floor register to span across the joists. That made it difficult for register placement.
