Barge boards

Would a roofer, etal, explain the use of a barge board along the perimeter
of a house's roof? What does it do? How is it made? How installed? How can one tell when the barge board needs to be repaired or replaced? Where can we look for additional info on this subject?

It kooks to me like it's one more way to confuse, instead of just calling it the fascia on the gable edge.
