Hi guys! First timer here. I am seriously debating on changing my gas water heater to an electric one due to the increase in gas prices in my state. Can any one give me an idea of what to watch out for, what I will need, how hard this will be, and maybe a brief outline on how to do this? Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Sasleep,
Welcome to the DIY Forums.

Select an electric water heater based on your needs. There are various brands available all at different prices. If you are on Co-Op or membership type of electric company, check with them also. They have members only special deals that give you a break on both the cost and the price of the water heater.

To install the electric water heater, you will have to cap off or remove( if you are sure you will not need it the future)the gas line.

A new seperate dedicated electric line and breaker will have to be run.(ask in the electric forum for instructions on how and sizing).

Your existing flue will need to be removed/sealed.

Good luck with your project.

You might do a little more research on this. Most people wanting to save money go from electric to gas. Go to a appliance center like home depot and look at the "energy guide" stickers on similar sized gas and electric water heaters. That way you can compare the actual cost of operation of both.

Go to http://www.warmair.net and compare fuel cost for where you live. this will tell you how to go on the water heater.
