I have been quoted $5000 CDN to remove an old enamel tub and install a multi-piece acrylic tub and wall kit...including $1000 for the new kit. I think I can do it myself for less....including delivery and disposal.
Questions: 1. If the piece fits without, do I have to remove all of the old wall tile?
2. How difficult is it to set the new tub in place....esp. is the drain likely to match up with the new tub?
I have done some simple copper pipe soldering/fitting and drywalling in the past. Am I likely to get in over my head and make the wife upset?

most tub surrounds that are sold in stores cannot be installed over tile. Try to find one that will install over tile and you will save your self the trouble of ripping it out and putting in drywall The ones you get from bathfitters or similar are made to go over anything I think. The adhesive used is not for plastic over tile[evaporation problems]. There should be no soldering at all if you plan on keeping the same plumbing fixtures. Just some carefull measuring. The drains for a tub are adjustable and can be made to fit any tub. manufacturers don't just dream up where they will put the drain and overflow they go in certain places for the most part. Even if the drain does not line up where the old one did you just loosen some slip nuts and turn it a littl As long as you can get the old tub out and the new tub in I see no reason to pay anyone almost 4000 cdn for a days work
