I am about to paint my kid's room. I would like something that can be wiped down or washed and will not screw up the finish. I was going to use a satin. What brands would you recommend? I am trying to stay away from $30/gallon if possible.

Satin [also called eggshell] would be a good choice. It comes in many price ranges. I believe Lowes sells some for about $12 a gal. The price of paint is usually reflective of the quality. The higher price paints usually cover and wear better. With this in mind consider whether 1 coat will cover and how long before you intend to repaint. Of course the pocket book always seems to have a big say.

Depending on your location/availablity, Porter's Silken Touch is hands down the most 'washable' paint I've ever used. But yes, it costs in the $25-$30 range. $12 paint will wear exactly like......$12 paint.

Like PWG said, $12 paint will wear like $12 paint. There are other advantages to the $30 paint. It goes on better and covers better and wears better.
And consider this: if its on the walls 5 years before you decide to change the decor, thats only $3/year more than the cheap stuff.

$12.00 will be pretty much the lowest price possible. even if you consider Behr paint which may be like 18 or19 dollars the difference between that and 30,00 is only $11.00 or $12.00. It never ceases to amaze me that people fail to consider that the lower priced item is not free and the real price you pay is the difference between the two.Without starting a war, a couple of coats of Behr paint will do the job and if it doesn't you will get your money back from Behr if not the Depot. Wipe it down with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner and you will be ok.
