I have reviewed some other forum posts and have seen some good stuff on this and thought I'd give it a shot. What the heck, it was a free TV.

All I see now when I turn the TV on is a bit of a small color specled line in the center of the screen. From what I have red, it appears that the Vertical Hold may be bad due to some leaky resistors or capasitors. The parts may add up to about 20 bucks or so and the local repair man said that he would fix it for about 100 bucks. I just thought I'd give it a look first since I tend to fix a lot of things that nobody ever thought I'd be able to fix.

I am not electronics major but have built some computers so understand about static discharge and power issues (don't kill yourself).

My biggest worry is that I will get shocked (even after the unit is unplugged) when trying to replace a part due to any energy reserve that may be stored up in the tube. I have heard this caution my whole life.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I recall the EHT supply to the tube is around 25KV. The tube acts as a capacitor and if you touch this lead you can get a nasty shock (can probably kill depnding on the amount of charge left). This lead attaches via a "sucker" type shield to the CRT. The normal procedure to make this safe is to use something like a screwdriver (with insulated handle) and short out the lead from ground. You should get a spark/bang and it should be safe after this.

There will be other caps in the power supply that can also shock you so I would check the circuit diagram if you can get one and discharge those also if you can.
