Hey all. I'm starting to put together plans for finishing my basement, and right now I am figuring out how all the framing will go together. I am planning on framing the walls with 2x4s. There are a couple of spots where I will need to build soffits out of 2x2s because of ductwork. I am wondering what is the recommended way to attach the framing for the wall to the 2x2 soffits. The soffits will be attached to the joists, so can I just attach the top plates of my walls to the 2x2 soffit framing? Or do I need to build in more support for the walls?
Thanks for any advice. This site is a huge help!

funnyguyMI,
Take a look at this link - it is a mixture of 2x2, 2x4 and steel studs used for soffit framing.

Hope this helps!

If I may add a question to the original....
I have one duct that is parallel to and right up against my concrete wall foundation. I can't frame anything in between it and the concrete, ie I have no way to tie the wall to the floor joists above. How do I frame the wall and soffit in this instance? Do I tie the 2x4 wall to the concrete below the duct somehow? Or do I tie the wall side of the soffit to the concrete and then the wall to the soffit? I was trying to avoid having the framing directly against the concrete, but I don't see any way to avoid it here? What about firestopping in this instance?
Thanks!

Craig_md,
Install W/T 2x stock on wall and use this as a securing point for wall and soffit.
Good Luck!
