Many DIY guidebooks on installation of hardwood floor say that you should undercut the door frame rather than cutting the hardwood strips when you install hardwood strips round the door. But for someone like me who is a first timer trying to install hardwood, I am concerned about the stability of the door frame once I cut the bottom part away. Am I worrying about something that is totally necessary? How deep and how much can one cut into the door frame?

Take a scrap piece of flooring and a pencil to mark how much you need to cut off bottom of door casing and trim. The amount removed from door frame will not affect the stability of the door.

For hardwood flooring instructions, go to www.nofma.org for the National Oak Flooring Manufacturer's technical manual on hardwood flooring installation.

The part that gets cut does not provide any support. The reason why they call it casing.
