I have recently aquired a Sony Wega KV-27FS100L TV manufactured in 2000. The colour is very distorted on the left 4-6 inches of the screen and on one small spot on the right hand side in the middle. The colour distortion ranges from bright green to black and white and purple. Can you please offer some advice as to the cause of this and what can be done to correct it and at how high of a cost. Many thanks for your help and advice.

If the distortion has a rainbow affect, It is probably a slipped shadow mask inside the picture tube and it cannot be fixed except by replacing the tube.

It's not quite a rainbow effect - it's more like a section of the screen has the wrong colors - usually green, sometimes blue

Try degausing (demagnetizing) the tube. If that doesn't fix it, you either have a purity problem or a slipped shadow mask. Purity can be corrected by a professional, the shadow mask is terminal. If the set shows signs of having been dropped, it is most likeky the latter.
