We are making a small kitchen countertop (2x2) with 1' sq marble tiles (half inch thick) over half inch thick pine. Four tiles cover the pine we already cut, with very little room for wide grouts. I prefer the look with narrower grout lines. Any drawbacks to proceeding this way? Or should we use a larger wood base to enable wider spacing of the tiles? Thanks for any input!

I would go no smaller than 1/8".
