I am going to remodel my basement into a family room. In the basement is an existing 9.5" x 5.75" support beam with lally's 8' O.C. One of the lally's is right in the middle of what would be the family room. I want to remove the lally. My question is: Can I add steel angles around the existing beam and lag bolt them to act as support so I could remove the lally in the middle?
FYI.. my home is a one story ranch style.
thanks Rick

rickarchitect,

As you are probably aware, the need for a structural engineer should be called to get their blessing with this idea. This stamped approval must be submitted with your building permit application. It is money well spent to avoid problems.

Many issues must be dealt with on this idea. Personally, the span will become 16' feet and that is quite allot to consider. The information that would be required is what is the depth of the home is, if you have pre-manufactured roof trusses versus stick built roof, etc. The issue is the load upon the existing beam now and what would the load be if you desired the 16' span.

Good Luck!
