I want to build a 400-foot, split-rail fence. I do not have help to sight it in and do not know how to keep the fence in a straight line. I tried string. Dumb idea. The string blows in the wind. Any suggestions?

No, you can't use string to pull a straight line in a 400' run. So you have a couple of options. With a helper in the middle of the run, you "eyeball" from corner post to corner post, and have the helper drive a stake so that it's in line with the corner posts. Now move the helper 100' in one direction and do it again, which splits one of the 200' runs into 100'. Now move the helper and split the other 200' run into 100'. Now you have the corners and 3 stakes set, and looking corner to corner, they should line up. Now you are within range of the lazer lites you can get at any big box store. You also have established short enough runs that the wind won't bother a nylon mason's line pulled tight.
