Installing 12 x 12 porcelain tile, 4 x 4 foot for woodstove hearth. Bought everything but thinset. Home Depot or Lowe's were trying to sell me premix,
which I did not buy because from what I see on tile forums, is not a good thing to use. They didn't seem to know what I should use. Can anyone tell me what product I should use? Tiles will be on concrete. Would Versabond
work, if so which type?

The versabond would be what you want. Lowes carries mapei brand which (if I remember correctly) and I actually like mapei brand better. I think the quality of the two is the same, I just like the way the mapei feels on my trowel. You want a modified thinset for the porcelain. It will be the thinset that is the most expensive. It should run you around fifteen a bag (you only need one bag) unless you get the white thinset which is about twenty. You actually don't need a full bag of thinset, I have seen in some stores there are 25# bags you can buy. You can look for that, I don't know if they are available everywhere though. If you question the thinset, it should say on the bag if it can be used for porcelain.
