Is there an easy way to tell if a superior thin set mortar can be used instead of an epoxy product when tiling over a slab? A vinyl floor (no asbestos!) was removed and the entire floor scraped. The tile store I am working with still suggested not using a thin set but the epoxy is so much more expensive I really want to make sure I have to use it.

Thanks!

If the cement slab is free from cracks, has no paint or sealer on it and any chemical residue from cleaning up the old adhesive has been flushed away, then you can use a good grade modified thinset under the tile. Any expansion joints should be honored when setting the tile. Some anti fracture membranes claim to go over the expansion joints but that could prove to be risky business if the buiding is subject to any movement.
