Hi,

We removed 35 year old VAT tile in our laundry room. We're left with a concrete slab with a thin coat of black mastic - some concrete specs showing throughout. The likelihood is that the mastic contains asbestos too and therfore can't be removed without creating a hazard. In fact, the abatement people sprayed some type of clear encapsulant over the mastic We don't want to raise the floor by putting down concrete board over the slab and it would have to be bonded too.

I'm looking for reccomendations on a thinset that can bond to (or through) the mastic to set the tiles. Laticrete Latipoxy 300 was one reccomendation (???) but as a homeowner, I can't find a dealer that will sell it to me.

Anyone have any opinions on how to approach this situation, how good the bond will be, and product reccomendations for the thinset?

Thank you!

I think a poly modified thinset will work. But lets get more than my opinion.

I would normally say a modified thinset also, as Daniel suggested, but the spray used to encapsulate causes concern because it may act as a sealer which would inhibit the bond of the thinset to the floor. Putting cement board down is not an option, cannot be done over a slab.
I am afraid you may need professional removal done to get the floor in a state where the tile will properly bond.
Call Laticrete at 203-393-0010 and ask for Art Mintie, the Director of Technical services. He will be able to answer the ??? on Latapoxy and get you a name where you can get it if that is the way to go. If Art is not available, ask for Henry Rothberg, the President. He is very accessible.
