hi
i'm thinking of putting a pond in the back yard in an area that only gets about 4 hours of morning sun a day. light shade plants grow will there (lily of the valley, hostas, hens and chickens, ferns, sedum and iris). will the pond be fine there, i have heard you need full sun for a pond to work. i hope to have water lilies and pond plants and some fish for the kids to look at.

Four hours of sun is enough to have some fun with an ornamental pool. You might even want to get the kids involved in the research for design and building ideas. Head for your local library with the kids and take a look at the books specifically on the subject and also take a look at landscaping books.
I have a book here in my home library called "Step-By-Step Landscaping" by Better Homes and Gardens. See if your library has a copy of this on their shelf. If not, they can request it through inter-library loan. It has entries all the way from design, location, construction, stocking with plants and fish, to maintenance. Good, on-hand info.
We had an ornamental pool with koi and the only problem we had was the neighbor kids. They were there getting snails and fish and I didn't even know it. Be sure to take into account the safety and liability protection steps such as fencing and insurance.
