I live on Long Island & we've had a lot of
rain this summer. The brick pathway on the
north side of my house has become black &
slimy from mildew. I tried clorox (out of
the bottle), but it didn't work; neither
did Tilex. Any suggestions?

You are probably dealing with a form of algae. Oddly enough, as you've discovered even straight chlorine bleach has little to no effect on it. Although most algae is green, some types are yellow, orange, black, colorless, etc.

Check at your local garden center for an algae/moss killer. Be careful. Some are just for use on roofs and are highly damaging to plants, lawns, etc. Read the labels carefully for use and cautions. Look for one that states it can be used on walkways - brick - then follow label directions and cautions.
