Some of our walls have holes in the plaster about 1 inch across and 1/2 inch deep. Cracks are about as wide as you can geta toothpick in. I am not sure what is under the plaster though. Can anyone tell us what to do to get these ready to paint? Thanks!

You need to determine if the plaster is still well bonded to the lath. If you press on the plaster is there any give? If so, all that material that's loose needs to be removed. If the plaster is still bonded tight to the lath, you can repair the cracks with either Plaster Weld or drywall compound. I like to use setting compound for this purpose as it sets much harder then regular premixed compounds and takes less time to set up, which speeds the process. You should tape the cracks with paper tape just like you would a normal drywall seam, this will help reinforce the patch. Hope that helps.
