I posted a while back and have gotten an estimate on a humidification system for my house, roughly 4,000 sq ft, and a reasonably tight house. I'm not the handiest guy, so had a estimate drawn up by what I'm told is a reputable local HVAC dealer. I have a gas fired hydro system with air handler in basement controlling first floor zone, with two air handlers in the attic, one for 2nd floor, d and one for finished attic. I cant put a humidifier on those, so question is what type of system to place on the basement handler. The local guy suggested putting two Aprilaire 600s on the basement, which would help humidify the entire house. Is that necessary? Considering he gave a $1600 installed price for two units which appear to cost about $300 total, I'm questioning a few things. I will have someone else come in, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Get 3 bids for it. He just though he had it made with you. Might take a look at this humidifier they are good. To put in a humidifier is a good DIY job

Thanks Ed, I certainly will. Out of curiosity, how long does it take a generally handy person to install a humidifier, assuming no unforseen issues. Helps me figure out how much labor they are charging.

Also, any big difference b/w Aprilaire and Honeywell, which seem to be the most prevalent brands offered?

Id say a DIY can in about 3 hours. Cause you have to stop and read the papers. A good tech and everthing goes ok 1 1/2 hr.
All humidifiers work some a little better than the other. You have to keep all of them clean so they work their best.
That www one I gave you I Like it cause it works the bets in hard water to stay clean the most. Dont like the drain kind

Try and tap in to the hot water line and use a A50 current sensing relay on the blower wires to turn it on with.
