I have a Whirlpool model ET21NKXGN02.The fresh food cabinet is warm, the duct inside is plugged with frost. The back of the freezer has quite a bit of heavy frost on it.The fan inside runs.I advanced the timer with a screwdriver untill the compressor stopped and should of started the defrost cycle.I could hear the timer running, and I also put a amp meter on the brown wire which I believe goes to the defrost heater, and it did not draw any power. It stayed in the defrost mode for a while till it timed out and the compressor started up again. There is a terminal with a pink wire that comes from between the timer and a bi-metal switch, acording to the diagram, and a brown wire that comes from the other side of the bi-metal switch and goes to the defrost heater. Now with the timer in the defrost mode, there is voltage present with the volt meter inserted in the test terminal. With the timer in the normal run mode there is no voltage. The back is heavily frosted up and so I decided to let it thaw out completely so as to not break the fan cover and take the back off. With what is known already,is the problem in that bi-metal switch?I would appreciate any advice. The appliance store is open on saturday and maybe I could get a new one today,or I am without a fridge till monday. Thanks a lot.

Hey,
Your defrost thermostat opens around 50-55 deg f,and closes when it's colder.Test it when it's warm and it should be open,no continuity and then purchase a bag of dry ice and put it on the thermostat until it's good and cold, atleast 20 deg and test it again it should be closed. When you manually put it into defrost it should of started defrosting.Alot of defrost timers are a four wire type.I believe 1-3 is your timer motor,1-4 is the run and 1-2 is your defrost. You can check it with a meter for continuity in each posistion. You can locate your wiring diagram and make reference. You can also make a continuity check on the defrost element.hope this helps. :coffee:
