I have a 27" Sharp TV, about 5yrs old now (Manf. Date 2000)... and recently its been acting up. Occasionally while on, you could hear a pop and the picture would drop for a second and come back. Once in a while when it did this, it would shut off... and you couldn't power it back on without unplugging it and plugging it back in. Sometimes it took a couple unplug/plug attempts for it to turn back on... when it didn't turn on, you click the power button and can hear the circuit energize and right about when you'd hear the tube charge it just clicks back off. As of this morning, this is all it will do... it lost picture and shut off, and since won't stay on. I have electronics experience (and a degree in computer engineering) and would like to try to repair this... any advice is GREATLY appreciated.

Also, been a while since I opened a TV... how much risk of discharge is there these days? Is there a safe method to ensure the set is discharged before working on it?
