Is there a rule of thumb as to how far from your screen your main viewing position should be or is it just what feels/looks best?
I currently have a 27" screen (some day I'll upgrade... like when I win a shopping spree) so is there a particular distance that is considered to be best for viewing?

WIth your set I would go with what looks best. It's going to vary with screen size, HD vs SD and resolution.
