My new cabinets will come about 2.5 in. from the ceiling .I want to fill the space from the cabinets to the ceiling with crown molding.Is the molding installed on the wall cabinets before going up or after they are installed?

After they are installed. The molding will cover up the gap your going to have between the cabinets and ceiling. You should pick out the molding profile you want before mounting the cabinets. Depending on the profile you select, you may need to adjust that 2 1/2" slightly.
