my gas range just started smelling like charcoal igniter fluid. it is not a gas smell. coincidentally, it started after i pulled it away from the wall to clean the dirt and vacuum the dust behind it. my mother has had the oven lined with aluminum foil for a long time. she baked the same day. the burners work on command and there is no gas smell. could the aluminum be the culprit?

I think I would call your local gas co and have them investigage the odor. Play it safe.
You may have cracked the gas connector when you moved the range

the gas company came out and found no leaks. the technician suggested that the high flame of the pilot may sometimes cause this smell. there was a white residue under the burner access panel. i am going to clean this and see if the smell goes away. any other suggestions?

If the top pilots are high and impinging on the metal top you WILL get an odor. This is quite common and an easy adjust most of the time. I assume the gas co tech made adjustments.
