Noticed sulfur smell in hot water after installing new water system. Bought new hot water heater (Whirlpool). Removed annode rod. Smell gone. After a month or two, sulfur smell returned. Just realized there is something called a Heat Trap/Annode Rod Comination still in the hot water heater. Is this most likely causing the smell and is it ok to remove it?

P.S. Recently replaced entire water system. Well water runs to chemical pump (bleach and caustic soda) then to 2 holding tanks. From there goes to carbon filter and water softener before going to hot water heater. No smell in cold water so think it's the hot water heater.

Remove the hot side nipple; some of them have a built-in anode rod on this.

If not......turn the temp setting to 140 temporarily to see if this corrects the problem.
