The tub in our bathroom is cracking at the base, and we are fixing to install a shower. I'm thinking of entirely removing and replacing the bathtub. Is this a possible DIY project, or do I need to hire a professional?

Changing out a bathtub to a shower can be done DIY. It DOES require some skills.
Bathtubs have 1-1/2" drains, showers require 2" drains. This means you will be be doing drain plumbing work.
If your tub is not equipped with a shower now, you will have to install the valve for such. Probably have to move the valve even if you have a tub/shower combo as the knobs will be too low.
Removing the old tub will include removing wall material. The tub has a lip under the wall. You will also have to make sure you can get the tub out or cut it up to remove.
These are SOME of the things you will have to do. If this is your only bathroom, you'll have to make arrangements for other facilities while the project is under construction. Good luck.
