Designing Kitchens and Bathrooms - Kitchen Countertops

We are slowly updating our kitchen to pull it out of the 70's and into the new millenium. We are now at the point of wondering what to do with our old butcher block laminate counter tops. While at Lowes the other day, as I was wandering through the kitchen section, I was pricing granite, corian, laminate, etc., and have found new laminates that do a pretty fair job or copying granite. However, I have a few questions. Can new laminate be installed directly over the old laminate ( in excellant condition ), is it easy to do it yourself ( and if diy, will it look professional?), or better to have it installed. This seems to be the cheaper alternative, although we are also mulling over the idea of laying ceramic tile on the counter tops. Any opinions out there? :confused:

Even as a DIY'er, it will cost you just about as much in tools and formica as it would to just have someone do it for you and install it. Formica brand Formica sells the "Granite Formica" that has the pours just like real granite.
