I have a question about replacing an entry door and using replacement windows in my late 50s limestone house.
I can post pictures somewhere if they will help:
I'm trying to discover how the wood frame of the window butts up to the limestone.
I've helped my father install replacement windows before which wasn't all the difficult, but the stone is causing me a headache.
One of the previous owners installed storm windows and caulked the bejeebers around them (close to an inch from the wood onto the limestone) and painted it an ugly, ugly lemon yellow color (same with the doors). I'm concerned that if I scrape off the caulk and paint from the exterior it will look horrible. Is there a way to install some kind of exterior trim?
I've peeled a bit of the caulk/paint mixture off of the window I want to replace ASAP and it seems the wood window frame butts up against the stone no problem. Doesn't seem to be an issue installing the window, just want the exterior to look good. Any ideas? (again I've got pictures I'll post when I'm not at work).
The entry door is another story, however. I want this thing out pretty quickly as well, it's wood, super thing (ugly yellow) and doesn't seem hung properly (gaps at the top), though I checked it for level and plumb and it seemed okay. The caulk/paint mixture on it is a bit different. If you're facing the door from the outside, the left-hand side of the frame butts up against the stone from top to bottom. On the right hand side, though there is about a 1/4" gap (that was caulked over) between the frame and the stone. This gap isn't filled with anything (it looks like they just spread the caulk from the wood to the stone to cover the gap. It is about an inch and half deep and the bottom of the inch and a half is more stone. I'm not sure how to go about installing a pre-hung door if there is only stone to attach to? Any stone-housers out there with some experience with this?
thanks in advance.
